Message from the Principal’s Office

Dear Parents and Carers,

With four weeks down of Term 2, it is great opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and see the progression of your child’s goals during the Student Support Group (SSG) meetings. A reminder Term 2 SSG meetings will be held next Tuesday 21st May from 10am- 6pm and bookings are now open via Compass. These meetings will be a 30-minute block with a requirement that your child attends with you. Your child only needs to be in attendance on this day for the SSG meeting.

An SSG is a partnership between schools, parents/carers, the student, and relevant agencies. The group works together to plan and support the educational, health, social, cultural, and emotional wellbeing of students. During the meeting, we work together to establish short-term goals that will lead to the achievement of long-term goals.

Last week we had a visit from optometrist from the ‘Glasses for Kids’ initiative. Glasses for Kids contributes to achieving the Government’s Education State targets including Learning for Life, Happy, Healthy and Resilient Kids, and Breaking the Link. 75 of our primary students were screened for free which was a fantastic outcome.

Another exciting event last week was our annual Careers Expo. The careers expo is aimed at our secondary students that are entering the next phase of their journey and what post school pathways options are available. A big thank you to the 30 odd external providers set up stalls which had lots of giveaways, your guidance and information was very valuable to our families. Well done to all involved!

This week our Grade 6 students travelled to Blackwood Outdoor Education Camp. The camp site is surrounded by the stunning Wombat State Forest, it is a destination exclusively for students from Victorian Special Schools, where they are given every opportunity to laugh, live, learn and have fun through outdoor adventure-based programs. The weather turned it on for our Grade 6 students who have come back to school with smiles on their faces with many tales of adventure. Thanks to our dedicated staff for giving our students the opportunity to attend camp, without you this wouldn’t have been possible.

Finally, I would like to wish all the mothers, grandmothers and female guardians a very special Mother’s Day on Sunday! I like to think this happens every day, but Sunday we acknowledge the efforts women have in our lives, no matter what age we are. I hope a breakfast in bed is the start of a special day for you.

7A News

We began Term 2 on a high note. It was good to see all the students returning to school and readily engaging in all the learning opportunities. Our day in the classroom starts with tabletop activities such as handwriting practice, reading stories using online apps, engaging in wordsearch, or completing unfinished tasks.

We continued to focus on Phonics in our English lessons with various levels of learning exposures based on student needs. Other areas of focus were Narrative writing, understanding the use of Adjectives and learning to improve our sentences using grammar and punctuation.

Numeracy focus was on Number and Place value, Measurement and Data. We did some hands-on activities to learn the various numeracy concepts that we are learning this term. We also did some Science experiments to explore what changes happen when various elements are brought together!

Students has opportunities to participate in Friday interschool basketball for the rest of the year, which will certainly build their confidence, teamwork, resilience, and cooperation. This is also a great opportunity to forge friendship.

Many of our students participated in the interschool Cross country at the start of the term and did well as a school.

We hope to finish the term on a high note by trying hard to do better each day.

News from 8B

Term 2 has started strongly. We at 8B are delighted to have started the term on a great note and have really settled in well.

We have a set routine for the day, and we try our best to make the best from it.

There is always a hustle and bustle and never a dull moment for us.

We start the day with keeping the SWPBS value of the week in mind and carry on with our learning through the course of the day.

We have been improving on our Phonics, Literacy, Numeracy, Science and getting better at it every day. We have a class library, and we take turns to read some interesting story books. Writing has also been our focus, and we take pride in building our vocabulary and engaging in reading and writing activities.

We are a lucky lot, who have the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities and join various programs from time to time - Chisholm, Advanced Learning, Basketball -Tournaments, Cooking. etc. to name a few.

We have set our goals and are working hard towards achieving them.

We thank our management team, teaching, and non-teaching staff for their cementing support.

Looking forward to having a great term.

Stay safe and warm.

Café Team

Had a catering function for the Principal team and reviewers lunch. They worked over 2 days to prepare a morning tea of gourmet club sandwiches, fruit platter and berry tarts and for lunch we had teriyaki chicken on a bed of pea mash and broccolini with saffron sauce.

News from 9/10B

9/10B have been doing lots of activities this year both in class and off campus. In class we are currently learning about writing procedures, surveys, reading comprehension and wellbeing strategies. Currently in numeracy, students were very excited to create and ask their peers questionnaires and collect and discuss the results. We are also doing a weekly cooking session in class. Students have been helping decide on the recipes, look up the ingredients and then follow the procedures in class. So far 9/10B has enjoyed making biscuits, scones, cakes and cinnamon scrolls. Aaron is looking forward to making M&M cookies next. 9/10B have also been doing a regular walking club. This is a highlight for many students including Jeshua because “it is good for you. It’s good for your legs and your mind”. On Monday some of the 9/10B students have Café program where they learn how to cook and serve Café style food. On Wednesday some of the 9/10B students attend Chisholm program where they participate in a range of sports programs. Then on Fridays many of the 9/10 students join in the school basketball competitions, we have many teams participating at different levels, and it is a great opportunity for students to develop their skills both physically and socially. We also have one student in 9/10B who is completing a work apprenticeship at a local warehousing factory.

Students in 9/10B are developing their team building skills and are starting to supporting their peers with social skills and helping each other with work. Well done 9/10B!
