Literacy

At Marnebek, we value and provide a multi-sensory approach to literacy curriculum delivery. Our literacy program combines rich indoor and outdoor play experiences with guided learning activities that encourage students to develop at their own pace. Our teachers plan and deliver programs targeting individual students’ goals and needs, with an emphasis on student-centred learning.

We believe communication underpins all areas of the curriculum and daily life, which is why we employ programs and strategies that teach students how to effectively communicate, whether that be through spoken language or some form of augmentative and/or alternative communication (e.g. picture symbols, signs or speech-generating devices).

Literacy at our Main Campus follows the Victorian Curriculum and is categorised into ‘Reading and Viewing’, ‘Writing’ and ‘Speaking and Listening’. We employ a consistent approach to teaching and use a variety of evidence-based programs that cater to our students’ diverse abilities and learning profiles.

We follow the VCAL curriculum at our senior school, delivering programs on Literacy Skills, Foundation Reading and Writing & Oral communication. These programs are aimed at developing literary skills in the social contexts of family, employment, further learning and community.

Our dedicated staff frequently engage in literacy-based professional development activities and have access to an extensive range of resources and skilled personnel.

We value and encourage your involvement in your child’s literacy development both at home and school.
