Dear Parents and Carers,
What an exciting start to Term 1 at Marnebek School! A huge welcome to our 2023 Prep students, new students and families. We hope you enjoy being part of such a vibrant and welcoming community.

School Council Elections
What is a school council and what does it do?
All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally constituted bodies that are given powers to set the broad direction of a school, in accordance with Ministerial Order 1280 Constitution of Government School Councils, and the Education and Training Reform Act 2006. In doing this, a school council may directly influence the quality of education for students.
Who is on School Council?
- Parents x 6
- Staff members x3
- Optional community member x1
- Student members ( x2)
Why is parent membership so important?
Parents on school councils provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills and a range of experiences and knowledge that can help inform and shape the direction of the school.
Those parents who become active on a school council find their involvement satisfying and may also find that their children feel a greater sense of belonging.
Do I need special experience to be on school council?
Each member brings their own valuable skills and knowledge to the role, however, in order to successfully perform their duties, councillors may need to gain some new skills and knowledge.
It is important to have an interest in your child’s school and the desire to work in partnership with others to help shape the school’s future
How do I get nominated?
Option 1: You can ask someone to nominate you as a candidate (it needs to be another parent of the school)
Option 2: You can nominate yourself.
Notice of Election and Call for nominations:
Marnebek School is calling for 3 parent nominations, and 2 staff members for the 2023 school council elections. These are 2 year positions.
If you would like to be nominated or self-nominate yourself, please contact the school office on 59963858 for the appropriate form which we can email out to you or alternatively you can pick it up from the office.
Nominations close at 4pm Friday 17th February.

Staying Safe from Mosquitoes
Recent wet and warm weather has increased mosquito breeding. Mosquitoes can carry diseases that may be passed on to people through mosquito bites. A range of mosquito-borne diseases have recently been detected in mosquitoes in northern Victoria. Mosquito-borne diseases can cause serious illness, including infections of the brain, with children particularly at risk.
The best way to prevent mosquito-borne diseases is to avoid mosquito bites.
In line with community health advice , families can protect against mosquito bites by:
· using insect repellent that contains picaridin or DEET on all exposed skin if outdoors when mosquitoes are observed, from October to March
· wearing long, loose-fitting clothing outdoors if possible if mosquitoes are around and covering exposed skin as much as possible. Summer school uniforms, including polos and shorts, can continue to be worn, but students should use insect repellent on exposed skin if mosquitoes are active
· limiting outdoor activity when mosquitoes are active.

News from Learning Neighbourhood 1 New Holland Drive Campus
Welcome to Prep B
Hello parents, carers and students,
We are off to a flying start in Preps at Learning Neighbourhood 1 in the BER building. There are four fabulous classes and we are settling in very well, building routines and being with our new classmates. Soon we all will be in a large, newly constructed school with new classrooms, facilities and play equipment.
We love our hands-on activities and working with a range of multi-modal experiences, such as music, playdough, glue and glitter, interactive whiteboard and large picture story books. We love all these experiences that are building our sense of belonging, engagement and enjoyment throughout our day.
We have started our Specialist classes of PE, Art, Music and STEM and work closely with our wonderful Allied Health team that focus on more specific learning areas. We have begun our ‘Learn to Play’ sessions which allow all Prep classes to participate together in structured learning environment. We hope you have the chance to say hello to us in and out of our classrooms and we all have a happy and healthy 2023.
From Prep B Dale and Sandeep
The Amazing 4/5A
We have had a great first 2 two weeks in 4/5A. We have enjoyed coming back to school by being able to see our friends again and getting back into routine. This week for maths we have been focussing on counting, skip counting and ordering. We love using a hands-on learning approach in the classroom as it has been making learning more fun and enjoyable.
One of our highlights each day has been our mindfulness Story Time sessions by reading the book ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ and we cannot wait to see what is going to happen next in the story. We have also enjoyed being able to interact with the rest of our 4/5 PLC by having joint sports sessions outside.
We are looking forward to a great and exciting year ahead in 4/5A!

Who’s Who @Marnebek
Welcome Zoe Cannell
My name is Zoe
I am a teacher in the 8/9E class. This is my 6th year teaching and I love working in special education. I’m very excited to join the Marnabek team and to get working with the amazing staff, students and families here. My favourite part about teaching is getting to know the students and seeing all the progress they make. I love seeing how much they can achieve. I also really love working with the whole education community and families to support students reach their goals across all aspects of their lives.
There are 6 people in my family, My husband Nick, Me-Zoe, and my four children; Isabelle, Cullen, Tana and Lily. We also have a pet dog called Rufus- he is 16 years which is very old for a dog, and we have a cat called T’Challa.
In my spare time I run. I love completing events and charity Fun Runs like Run4theKids, and I am working towards long distance running. Recently my children have started to do some running with me, which is great and I’m hoping they will sign up to some Fun Runs too. I also enjoy going to the beach, and going on day trips with my family. I like sewing and craft – although unfortunately I don’t have much time for this at the moment.
Favourite Movie: Avengers | Food: steak and chocolate – not together | Music: Metallica and Aha
Fun Facts
My birthday is April 12th
My husband and I always try to make themed cakes for our kid’s birthdays.
We also enjoy dressing up, especially for Halloween – which is also Tana’s birthday.
I would love to get to know everyone in the Marnabek community. Please feel free to pop over and say hi.
I look forward to this new exciting journey.
Book Club News
Welcome back families to another year of fabulous reading, and I would just like to say thank you to everyone who has helped support the Book Club since it has been back up and running.
Building reading skills is an important part of the learning process and your success at school. It starts with reading books at home. Start your reading habits small to begin with, be consistent, and watch them grow!
Here are some tips to start the year on the right page. Remember, reading can be fun and rewarding!
• Set reading goals. That could be to increase your reading level by the end of the year, finish a chapter book series you’d started, or simply read for a few minutes longer each night.
STRONG WITH BOOKS
• Set up a regular reading routine: Read for at least 10 minutes every day!
• Create a comfortable reading nook at home.
• Make reading fun by reading aloud with your family.
• Get inspiration for your next reading adventure all year round with Book Club!
Look through the pages of the Book Club catalogue with your parents and discover some amazing new reads.
As you know, when you buy a book for your child you are supporting not only their reading but their school as well!
We have a fabulous year ahead of us this year for book club starting off with our first Issue 1 of Book Club News
Inside the issue, you will find a colour by number and also a word search. This will give the kids something to do after school and it’s fun. Book orders are due back on 17th February. Please make sure you update your child's account in LOOP.
Also coming up this term is our
Famous Book Fair and this years theme is
Bookaneer, Where books are the Treasure!
More details will be released when we get closer to the launch, so stay tuned.
I will be looking for your feedback on Issue 1!
